Lotus Cuff

Making this cuff bracelet was like writing a sonnet to the art of fold forming. There is something so beautiful about metal forged with a hammer to form a three-dimensional shape. I wanted to take this shape, so like a lotus blossom, and place it gleaming on top of a cuff bracelet. It is my homage to this beautiful, sculptural technique.

silver and copper lotus cuffFold forming sometimes reminds me of making paper dolls. I fold the metal over and over. Then, instead of cutting into the folds, I forge the edges with my hammer. I hammer flat the edges of the metal, hitting it again and again. When the metal is ready, I gently spread the folds and pleats the way you open up a paper doll. As I open the metal, the beautiful shape emerges.

This copper lotus has a shiny, burnished finish. It is soldered to a sterling silver bracelet with a matte finish.
